 UPTOWN FUNK

Uptown Funk was released in November of 2014 by Bruno Mars. I decided to do my blog post about this song because not only have I heard it on the radio and other streaming places, but I also played it with my band in high school! This was in our 'pep band' binders that we played at both football and basketball games all the time. The song starts out with clapping on beat and a deep voice, then a guitar comes in and the chorus begins. The entire song is a very happy and upbeat song, keeping listeners entertained and intrigued. I like that the clapping is lifted for a little bit and then comes back throughout random times in the song. There is also a brass band in the main chorus of the piece that has fun beats, I like it! The lyrics to the piece have a hip-hop type style and work choice, but is appropriate for most listeners.

I think this song was most likely written for a teenage audience, but again is appropriate for most listeners. The song is played as a pump-up song at sports games, as well as even played at school dances. I think this song was most likely written to be danced to or listened to with a group, having fun. Overall, I think this song became so popular because it repeats itself, making for an easy listen. It is a fun and upbeat song and I think it could even be considered 'time-less'.

    Hey! That is so fun that you played this song in your band! It for sure is one of those songs that would be fun to play at football and basketball games. I would agree that this song is a dancing song and just has an upbeat fun feeling to it. It for sure is a song that we will all remember, I still remember when it become big!

    I remember when this song first came out. Me and my brother thought that it was the coolest song because it almost said the "F" word, but didn't. My parents hated this song and whenever it would come on, they would immediately turn it off. Good review!

  How Deep is the Ocean   Irving Berlin I chose to analyze the song, "How Deep is the Ocean" that we also listened to in class on September 20th. This piece was composed by Irving Berlin and sang by Bing Crosby. This song came out in 1932 and was a very popular song in this time. One thing that stuck out to me about the piece was the background music and dynamics throughout the song. Dynamics were not included in most songs at this time and I liked how Bing Crosby sang with the dynamics to match the background music! Week 4 Blog Post

  Taking a Chance on Love Benny Goodman This song starts very upbeat with a brass-like band and has a fairly long introduction period. After the introduction is complete, the lyrics are added and these discuss the instrumentals, love, and taking chances on new and exciting situations. The arrangement that I decided to listen to on Spotify included a female singer that added great dynamics along with the instrumentation. There are many trumpet riffs and then the saxophones copy the trumpets rhythm with their own tone and style. I liked hearing the "call-and-response" type instrumentation throughout the piece but especially in the saxophone and trumpet sections.  One part of the music that surprised me was the intense solo section in the middle of the song. Week 6

  You Can't Hurry Love The Supremes  I just chose this song because I thought it was new and I had never heard it, but I totally have! This piece was played in my calculus class my senior year during our 'work time' like everyday haha! I love this piece because the background music and the singer's voice go together so good. The song has had happy feel to it and is very upbeat. I like that there are many repetitions between the different verses which makes it an easy song to listen to and follow along with. This is one piece that you can recognize just off the bat, right from that first few beats of the piece. This song starts with just percussion, then the band comes in with a high instrument (like an alto saxophone or trumpet). After that beat, the singer comes in and joins the band. The singer remains the big part of the song for the rest of the song, but does allow the band to also crescendo and decrescendo. I like the dynamics and repetition in this piece as well. ...
