East St. Louis Toodle-Oo" Duke Ellington

This Duke Ellington song came out in 1927, which is within the time period we have been studying recently in class. I was part of the jazz band and concert band in high school and had heard his name before so I decided to give it a listen!  This song has many instruments throughout but has no lyrics which is cool, in my opinion! I was a trumpet player in my band and this songs starts with a trumpet solo with a 'mute' in. A trumpet mute is something that is placed inside the bell of the horn to change the sound and gives a cool effect especially in jazz music! Throughout the piece, many different instruments solo with an improv feel to them, and make up their solo as they go along through the song. I enjoyed listening to the different notes and rhythms in their solos.

I picture this song being played on main street of Disneyland or even in a new movie or dance group. This is an upbeat song with a jazz or swing feel to it. If I had to guess the target audience for this piece, it would most likely be for dancers or for young adults and teens. Overall I think this piece fits the time very well and would have been very popular among all American music listeners.

  1. I am very impressed how you are able to recognize that this piece starts with a muted trumpet! I love this song, and it also most definitely reminds me of Disneyland, to be specific, New Orleans square, where they have their little jazz bands marching around. I love the feel of this song:)

  2. I previously didn't notice the difference in the sound of the trumpet at the beginning but now I do! Also your comment on how you pictured this being played on the main street of Disney sparked my interest, and I found out that he actually played at Disney Land in the Carnation Plaza Gardens. There are pictures of him, Walt Disney, and people dancing so you are spot on for the target audience.
